In an effort to preserve the memory of traditions, customs, and fireside tales, Mrs. Patton canvassed remote areas and sources seeking material for this book. Described are the influx of settlers, the life of the early pioneers, improvements, roads and transportation, the development of Western North Carolina as a summer resort, the creation of the county, the town of Hendersonville chartered, cultural history, the Flat Rock community, the Civil War and new growth, and Henderson County up to World War I. A lengthy chapter with biographical and genealogical information on over fifty early pioneer families and individuals is included.
