This history of Fairfield County, by native Fitz Hugh McMaster, is an informative and entertaining account which combines narrative by the author, sketches by other citizens of the county, and pages of valuable statistics about the county and its citizens. Genealogical material is readily available in this volume: in chapters on early settlers, land grant owners and locations, a census of farms with names of owners, teachers at the Mount Zion Institute, and lists of county officers including senators and representatives from 1776 to 1941. Other genealogical records are found in rosters of soldiers in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Seminole War, Mexican War, Civil War, and World War I; Heads of Families in the U.S. Census of 1790; and twenty pages of local census taken in 1829. An every-name index was prepared for this reprint edition.
