Banastre Tarleton, a name well known to Carolinians during and after the Revolution, was a skillful leader of light cavalry. This 26-year-old earned a reputation among Americans as a vicious fighter and a bold enemy. His cruelty became legendary and the terms "murderer," "hypocrite," and "ravisher" were applied to him as he earned the reputation of "Bloody Tarleton." "Tarleton's Quarters" came to be a synonym for his cruelty. He took part in the fighting at Camden, at Cowpens, at Guilford Courthouse, and at other lesser encounters. His history of the campaigns in which he participated is valuable for the detail it contains and for the reports and other documents printed therein. It has long been valued as an eyewitness account of the Revolution in the South, and is interesting for the light it sheds on the fighting from the British point of view.
