This volume is a history of the invasion of the Carolinas by Lord Cornwallis in 1780-81. It has a special emphasis on the Battle of Guilford Courthouse leading up to Yorktown. Attention is also given to the Battles of Camden, King's Mountain, Cowpens, Hobkirk Hill, and Eutaw Springs. David Schenck was a lawyer-turned-battlefield preservationist and is considered the "father of Guilford Courthouse National Park." He organized the Guilford Battle Ground Company and served as its first president. This is frankly a patrotic history designed to correct the "great injustice done to the militia of North Carolina" in other accounts of the battle. Believing that the credit for repelling the British invasion had been wrongfully ascribed to other states, the author wrote this history in defense of his native state. Nevertheless, until the late 1990s, the interpretation of the battefield accepted was based on Schenck's knowledge of the fighting as well as of the land. More recent archaeological and historical investigation has revealed some inaccuracies but without Schenck's early work, the site of the battle might never have been saved.
