This collection of letters and papers relating to the Revolution in South Carolina is the result of 25 years of collecting by the editor, Robert W. Gibbes, a physician, newspaper editor, politician, and historian of Columbia, South Carolina. They cover the years 1764 through 1782. While the material is primarily concerning South Carolina, there is ample mention of individuals and activities in neighboring states as well as the entire Southern campaign. The usefulness of the original material is greatly enhanced by the inclusion of new indexes for the volumes in this reprint edition. The first volume concerns mainly William Henry Drayton; the others contain military correspondence, a good portion of which is letters between Francis Marion and various other officers and officials. These volumes present valuable primary source material about the Revolution and about men and events of importance to the progress of the war in the South.
