Meriwether's history of higher education in South Carolina, which originally grew out of a doctoral dissertation, was received upon publication as the most comprehensive, balanced history of the state's free school system and institutions of higher learning, and still retains its value for historians of American education. Chapter headings include: Early Education in the Colony; Education in the Academies; Collegiate Education; Educational and Charitable Institutions of Charleston; Denominational Education; Free Schools and Education of the Negro; and South Carolina College.
